Expanding hospital logistics in Panama with a reliable pneumatic tube system

In Panama, a hospital that had been under construction and continuous development for many years needed to expand and integrate its pneumatic tube system across new hospital buildings. Because part of the infrastructure and original designs dated back several years, connecting the new buildings brought several technical challenges.

The challenge: connecting new hospital buildings

The hospital continued to grow through multiple expansion phases. This meant that the Pneumatic Tube System had to be adapted to reach 13 requested stations across the hospital.

Installing the 160 mm tubing network required detailed analysis, planning and coordination. The system had to connect different parts of the hospital while supporting reliable transport of medication and laboratory samples.

Over more than 10 years of working together, both teams developed a close understanding of the system, the local technical approach and the specific needs of the healthcare environment.

This close cooperation was important during the project. Some technical situations required extra attention and creative problem-solving, especially because the hospital had been expanded over time and the existing infrastructure was complex.

Improving response times for laboratory tests

Telecom delivered a reliable pneumatic transport solution that improved internal logistics for medication and laboratory sample delivery. Before the installation, long walking distances inside the hospital affected response times for several medical laboratory tests.

With the expanded Pneumatic Tube System, the hospital was able to reduce transport delays between departments and the main laboratory. As a result, the hospital could meet international response-time standards for several laboratory tests that previously could not be achieved.
