Upgrading hospital logistics without disrupting daily care

In a healthcare environment, internal transport is part of the daily rhythm. Samples, medication and other critical items need to move quickly and reliably between departments. For this hospital, the pneumatic tube system was already an essential part of that process.

The challenge was clear: the existing system had to be upgraded to the latest Telecom standard, but downtime had to be kept to an absolute minimum. The hospital relied on the system for the movement of samples throughout the estate, which meant that continuity of service was just as important as the technical upgrade itself.

Together with Quirepace, Telecom delivered a replacement system with 34 stations across three zones, combined with an independent A&E system. The upgrade also included RFID+ technology and full track-and-trace functionality, giving the hospital better visibility, control and reliability in its internal logistics process.

To minimise disruption, the project was carried out in phases. Enabling works for the new six-way diverter interchange were completed in advance, and the independent A&E system was replaced before the main system upgrade. This approach helped maintain service in A&E while new stations were added and made operational step by step.

The result was a successful upgrade delivered ahead of the agreed programme. By reducing the expected downtime, the hospital could benefit sooner from improved reliability and the latest functionality offered by Telecom Pneumatic Tube Systems.
