Modernising Hospital Logistics Without Disrupting Care

In a hospital environment, internal logistics are a vital part of daily healthcare operations. Laboratory samples, medication and other critical materials must be transported quickly, safely and reliably between departments. For this hospital, the pneumatic tube system was already an essential part of those daily processes.

The challenge: upgrading with minimal downtime

The hospital wanted to upgrade its existing pneumatic tube system to the latest Telecom standards while maintaining uninterrupted healthcare operations. Because the system was relied upon every day for transporting diagnostic samples and other critical items, downtime had to be kept to an absolute minimum.

Careful preparation and a well-planned implementation strategy were therefore just as important as the technical upgrade itself.

A phased approach for maximum continuity

Working together with Quirepace , Telecom delivered a complete system upgrade consisting of 34 new stations across three transport zones, complemented by an independent A&E system serving the emergency department.

The upgrade also introduced RFID+ technology and full track & trace functionality, providing the hospital with greater visibility, improved reliability and enhanced control over its internal logistics.

To minimise disruption to daily healthcare activities, the project was carried out in carefully planned phases. Preparatory work for the new six-way diverter was completed in advance, while the independent A&E system was replaced before the main upgrade began. This ensured uninterrupted logistics within the emergency department while the remainder of the system was modernised step by step.

Delivered ahead of schedule

Thanks to detailed planning, close collaboration and precise execution, the project was completed ahead of schedule. By significantly reducing downtime, the hospital was able to benefit sooner from improved system reliability and the latest Telecom pneumatic tube system technologies.

This project demonstrates how technical expertise, careful project planning and long-term partnerships enable hospitals to modernise their internal logistics without compromising daily patient care.
